I have just received the devastating news that my beloved close friend and mentor Dr. Amir Houshang Kavousi passed away in the hospital in Tehran, Iran.
The new era in Iranian cinema was foreshadowed by him, the first Iranian graduate of Paris’s IDHEC in 1947, who returned home afterwards and commenced a long and tremendously influenced career as a film critic. He also directed his own first feature, 17 Ruz beh E’dam (17 days to Execution) a crime drama, in 1957.
I will write more about him and finish my long documentary about his life in Cinema very soon. I am very sad but never forget the man who was a great scholar, well read, true liberal with a powerful and passionate pen and his impact on Iranian cinema that is profound and undeniable.
