| This was the first academic book about Iranian Cinema to be published in the west in English. The book consists of three parts: a chronology of Iranian Cinema, a complete annotated filmography of all Iranian feature films made from the first one in 1930 up to 1985, and various charts and indexes to put it all in perspective. The author has examined more than twelve hundred feature films from the birth of the Iranian film industry with the production of Abi & Rabi by Ovanes Ohanian (Oganians) to 1985, which saw the release of Amir Naderi’s groundbreaking The Runner. All films are listed alphabetically by year with complete credits and festival awards when applicable, and more than a hundred have been spotlighted with extended plot write-ups for their particular historical, social, or artistic merit. Peter Chelkowski of NYU’s Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies called Iranian Cinema “an invaluable and permanent document of Iranian films” and famed film critic Andrew Sarris wrote that “Maghsoudlou can be credited with nothing less than preserving the cultural heritage of his people on film.” This book is currently out of print.
